A Bethlehem man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Northampton County Court to kidnapping an 84-year-old woman he’d just seen win at a casino slot machine, and robbing her of $7.
Hykeem Sessoms, 39, was immediately sentenced to 12 to 24 years in state prison under the terms of a negotiated plea deal, District Attorney Terry Houck’s office announced.
Sessoms had been scheduled to face trial in March in the 2019 crime. Members of the victim’s family were in court for Wednesday’s plea and sentencing, according to the prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Julianne Danchak.
Judge Samuel Murray sentenced Sessoms to consecutive terms of six to 12 years on each count of kidnapping and robbery. Sessoms was also ordered to pay $91.02 in restitution to the victim for the medical treatment she received as a result of the incident, according to the prosecutor’s office.
“To anyone contemplating taking advantage of our senior citizens, let this serve as an example of the swift and immense consequences you will face as a result,” Danchak told lehighvalleylive.com. “We will stop at nothing to protect our vulnerable populations.”
Sessoms in a brief statement before the court apologized for his actions, which he attributed to substance abuse issues, according to Danchak. He also voiced hope that during his incarceration he will be able to receive treatment for mental health and substance abuse problems, she said.
A call for comment to Sessons’ public defender was not immediately returned.
The crime occurred Dec. 11, 2019, after the victim went to Wind Creek Bethlehem for senior day, where senior citizens are entered into a raffle to receive $500 of free slots play, the district attorney’s office said in a news release.
Around 2 p.m., the victim won a sum of money at a slot machine she was playing and immediately went to cash out.
Unknown to her, Sessoms had been watching her and followed her, standing behind her as she collected her winnings, the release states.
He followed her as she left through the lobby of the Southside Bethlehem casino and entered the third floor of the parking garage.
“As she was walking to her car, she was approached from behind by the Defendant who told her that he had a gun, that he would kill her, and demanded her money,” the release states. “When she refused, he kicked her in the shin causing her to fall into her car. He immediately entered her vehicle and ordered her to get in and to drive.”
As the victim drove out of the casino, Sessoms pulled the hood on her jacket over her head and repeatedly struck her in the side of the head while continuing to demand her money, the release states.
Sessoms, who was living in the 1800 block of Watkins Street in Bethlehem, told the woman where to drive before grabbing her purse and removing seven $1 bills.
Around Easton Avenue and Jennings Street in Northeast Bethlehem, Sessoms threw her car into park and fled with her $7.
The manhunt that followed led to lock-ins and dismissal delays at Bethlehem schools before he was taken into custody.
Sessoms has been incarcerated since the incident.
